Cross-training: lazy river

I’ll be the first to admit when I heard the Erie Community Center had a lazy river, I thought of Water World and how people veg on a tube, floating through the water.

ECC’s lazy river is nothing like this. It’s current will float anyone through it without much effort on the person’s part.

The first time I used ECC’s lazy river was over a year ago. I had the pool to my self and I walked against the current for about 30 minutes. I wasn’t feeling anything, so I got out to head to the locker room and change into clothes for a cardio workout… but then it hit me like a brick wall: that was a hard workout and I was hungry!

Today I revisited the lazy river and confirmed I can’t be lazy during this activity. While 20+ people played with the current in the lazy river, I walked against it.

It only took 20 minutes for me to feel like my legs got a good workout. It was a challenge, with or without a knee injury, and my knee felt strained just a couple times when the jets along the pool wall were at their max.

I will definitely keep up the lazy river activity as a part of my cross training.

They were working on the hot tub today – otherwise I would have incorporated that, too. I’d consider it a cool-down next time. Post workout, I promise I’d stretch in there. 😉
