As Little Dude grows out of babyhood and into his toddler years (what! did I really just type that?!), I have become more interested in creating a bedtime routine that he can count on.
We read a children’s book from the library called Bedtime and the back of it has tips for bedtime.
Here is the first tip (summarized):
- #1 create a routine. Since little ones need 10-12 hours of sleep a night, it’s important to start an early bedtime routine to get them in bed at a decent hour. The book suggests starting one hour before bedtime. Turn off electronics and stop roughhousing to cue this time of night.
- On a side-note: this seems like an excellent idea for adults too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to fall asleep without an hour before bedtime to wind down. It’s really hard to do… unless I’m exhausted and I fall asleep as my head hits the pillow. I kind of wonder how many adults wouldn’t complain of insomnia if they followed this rule the book encourages for toddlers. 🙂
