Love and Respect: by Emerson Eggerich | personal book review

Last year I made a 30 Before 30 List and one of the items I really wanted to do was attend Family Life’s Weekend to Remember marriage conference.  We had attended as newlyweds but, seriously, we’ve gone through so much since then, it was time for a tune-up.  (What do newlyweds know anyways?!) 😉

While attending the retreat, we browsed the Family Life resource center and both agreed on this audiobook: Love and Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs by Emerson Eggerich.

You would think we’d already know this, since we got married in 2004 and attended the retreat in 2012, but it’s an incredibly complex topic that, I believe, is never truly mastered.

While that might sound discouraging, the walk-away point I got from this book was that we should be in God’s word, know His word, and have our marriage point to His example of love and respect.

Love your spouse, even when they don’t deserve it.

Respect your spouse, before they even deserve it.

It’s easy to be nice to someone on a “good day” but when one or both of you are going through a bad day or a bad season, copy God’s grace: show love & respect.

Overall, I gave this book 4/5 stars on Goodreads.  It was very, good and I liked it a lot.  Being that I’ve read a lot of books on marriage, there were some topics that I have heard before, which was the only reason I didn’t give it 5/5 stars.
