I have tried quite a few protein shakes and feel like its VERY hard to find a protein shake that tastes great, doesn’t have nasty fillers and also one that fills me up.
Even protein shakes at the health food store are rather disappointing… either entirely nasty (but extremely healthful) or it tastes like liquid candy and isn’t very good for you.
Can any of you relate? 🙂
I first heard about Shakeology when I did P90X in the spring of 2012. I didn’t try any at that point, but my curiosity has grown since then – especially since I heard they were indeed a protein shake but ALSO full of other vitamins and minerals. I follow a fair amount of healthy people on Instagram and I see a Shakeology drink in my feed nearly every day!

I tried the vegan chocolate and the vanilla. I avoid soy due to my thyroid and also because I have a sensitivity to it. I like that the chocolate vegan flavor is 100% vegan, soy-free, and dairy-free.
It has a proprietary blend of sacha inchi, chia, flax, quinoa, amaranth, brown rice and pea protein. I was so pleased with the flavor, especially considering it had no whey in it.
The super-fruit/antioxidant blend is: camu-camu, acai, acerola cherry, bilberry, goji berry, green tea, luo han guo, pomegranate, rose hips.
The super-green/phytonutrient blend is moringa, chlorella, spirulina, spinach, barley grass, kamut grass, wheat grass, oat grass.
The adaptogen (to help your body adapt to stress) blend is: ashwagandha, astragalus, cordyceps, ginkgo, maca, maitake, reishi, schisandra, holy basil.
The pre- and probiotic/digestive enzyme blend is: yacon root, lactobacillus sporogenes, amylase, cellulase, lactase, lipase, protease, bromelain, papain.
A serving size is 44g, which is what came in the sample Jessica sent me. You are supposed to mix it with 8-12 oz of liquid and ice in a blender. I decided to use almond milk because that’s what I always use for protein shakes and smoothies.
If you purchase a full container of it, there’s 30 servings to get you through the month (yes, they recommend you drink it daily). There’s 170 calories in the powder and with 8 oz of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (which has 35 calories), this meal replacement weighs in at 205 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 22 grams of carbs and 16 grams of protein.
I am a lover of CHOCOLATE, so I don’t enjoy just any-run-of-the-mill chocolate. And I really liked this flavor! I told Jessica it reminded me a bit of the chocolate Organic food bar. I mixed it with unsweetened almond milk and some ice cubes for a straight-up shake. Jessica has different recipes to try with Shakeology, but I wanted to test out the flavor in its pure form.
So I liked the flavor and consistency, quality of ingredients, and I also liked it kept me FULL and not craving more food for the majority of the morning. It might keep me full longer when I’m not breastfeeding, but I currently have a newborn (and a 3-year old). I was able to have the energy to keep up with both of them and breastfeed the newborn without being hungry as quickly eating a different meal/snack. For those who have nursed before, you can understand what I mean. I could eat like a teenage boy going through a growth spurt while breastfeeding!
I also tried the vanilla flavor & definitely prefer the chocolate. Even though vanilla wasn’t my favorite flavor, did you notice I used my bullet mixer instead of our Ninja? It mixed up great in there, too! If I had another go at the vanilla I would try one of Jessica’s recipes with it. 🙂
